| From Marina Abramovic's sketchbooks |
Dear All,
Thanks for thinking together about Octopi and Boredom as Teachers, and radical decisions about how to shape a life in the arts. Next week, we have another eccentric set of works and a life to explore, those of durational artist and performance artist Marina Abramovic.
First, though, a note about journals. In your syllabus, I write that you'll turn in your journal three times,:
- Sept 29: Turn in Journal 10%
- Oct 27 Turn in Journal 10%
- Dec 8 Journal Due 5%
Each week, I will make at least one journal assignment, tasks like: reflect on particular moments from the film or reading we had for homework, or complete the questions from the Design Your Life Workbook. You should plan on engaging deeply with the assignments that inspire or challenge or seem right you in that moment, and just dipping your feet in those assignments that do not seem as valuable for you now.
I recommend that you also take ime to reflect in your journal on other topics that catch your attention in relation to this class. .
At the end of class today, I handed out worksheets that, unfortunately, did not copy clearly. What a waste of trees. Thank you to those who let me know. Below I include photos of the sheets.
You can tape those pages into your journal, copy the questions in, or otherwise leap of the worksheets and into the task, keeping it handy in your journal.
Note: When I collect your journals, you can fold over or place sticky notes over or otherwise block me from material that you don't want to share with me

Then: Prepare for class 9/15
View: The Artist is Present. You'll need to be logged in to UNCSA. The film is 1 hour 45 minutes.
Bring in points from the film that you’d like us to watch together, including specific timestamps.
Journaling:
1. the worksheets are on this blog post
2. continue to reflect on your relationship to quiet and boredom, and how they operate in your life and work.
3. Reflect on the film, including specific Time stamps

BUILDING YOUR COMPASS
With a compass to guide you, you can make decisions in a more straightforward way, seeing the connections between who you are, what you believe, and what you are doing.
The Design Your Life goal is coherency. A coherent life is one lived in a way that you can connect the dots between who you are, what you believe, and what you're doing. This increases your sense of self and creates a more meaningful life. According to the authors, it can also help you see when and perhaps how to compromise and where problems exist that need attention.
Define your workview
Why do you work?
How does work relate to you as an individual, to others, and to society?
What defines good or worthwhile work?
What role does money play?
What role do experience, growth and fulfillment play?
Define your lifeview
What is the meaning or purpose of life?
What is the relationship between the individual and others?
Where do family, country, and the rest of the world fit in?
Is there a higher power, and, if so, what impact does this have on your life?
What are the roles of joy, sorrow, justice, injustice, peace and strife?
